Year 8’s Home Learning

Year 8 Proud

  • Research into your family background. Choose one member who you are proud of. Interview him / her to find out more information and what is important for him / her in life. What things did you learn that will help enhance your life? Write up an action plan and carry it out to make a positive change in your life. Keep a diary of your results.
  • Be proud of your school and help it look good. Choose an area of the school and improve it and maintain this improvement for at least  6 months. Keep a diary of your actions.
  • Be proud of your home and help it look good. Choose two areas of your home and keep them clean and tidy.( This could include an area in th Keep a diary of your actions.
  • Take responsibility for your own school uniform, including its washing and ironing and polishing shoes. Keep a diary of your actions.
  • Take responsibility for making your own school lunch at least one day per week for at least one term. Keep a diary of your menu and achievements.
  • Create a piece of artwork to a standard that can be displayed around the school.
  • Extend your technology skills by designing clothing which would be suitable for the four seasons in Christchurch. A minimum of 20 garments and accessories.
  • Create your own challenge under the heading of proud.

 

Year 8 - Active

  • Improve your numeracy skills by completing 5 homework challenge sheets and achieving 90% accuracy.
  • Complete a mathematics achievement challenge.
  • Improve your reading skills by reading one of your Duffy books and presenting a review of the book in the most interesting way you can.
  • Improve your study skills by researching something you are interested in. Present it to your class in a professional way, using at least one type of ICT.
  • Improve your writing skills. Complete a piece of writing and publish to a standard that can be displayed around the school.
  • Create a movie that highlights the importance of at least one of our school’s values.
  • Join an out of school sports club. Turn up to every practice, be prepared with all your sports gear. Take responsibility for cleaning all your sports clothing and equipment. Demonstrate excellent sportsmanship. Keep a diary of your activities.
  • Extend your technology skills by designing and making a self propelled craft.
  • Learn a new skill. Think carefully about a new skill you would like to have and keep a diary of what you do to learn that skill. (eg. swimming, dancing, playing a musical instrument, weaving, touch typing.)
  • Start learning a new language and create a language game to help others learn it.
  • Improve your fitness. Keep a diary of your activities over at least 4 weeks. It should include walking or running a total of at least 70 kilometers.
  • Join a club or cultural group out of school. Participate in all meetings,  rehearsals and performances for the year. Keep a diary of your activities for 1 term.
  • Create your own challenge under the heading of Active.

 

Year 8 – Risk Taker

  • Go without television for 2 weeks. Keep a diary of your thoughts and what you did instead.
  • Prepare a short speech, demonstration, book review etc. and present it to your class and then to the school at an assembly.
  • Prepare 2 evening meals consisting of two courses, including a menu, cooking, serving and cleaning up. Present photographs and comments from your guests.
  • Choose a relevant controversial topic that you have strong feelings about. Write a letter to the editor of any newspaper and send it in for publication.
  • Decide on a healthy challenge to take you “out of your comfort zone.” This could be eating, exercising, striving to achieve something etc. Stick to it for a term and write a diary about your progress.
  • Give your skills to others. Organise a “lunchtime club” and run it at least once a week for 4 weeks to teach others the skill you have.
  • Create your own challenge under the heading of Risk Taker.

Year 8 - Respectful

  • Choose someone you have a lot of respect for. Prepare interview questions (at least 10 complex questions). Record the interview and what you have learnt from this person.
  • Choose an area around your classroom or the school and take personal responsibility for keeping it neat and tidy. Keep a diary of your actions.
  • Create a powerpoint which outlines the types of behaviours which show what respect for each other or the environment actually looks like.
  • Create your own challenge under the heading of Respectful.

 Year 8 - Kind

 

  • Give your time to visit an elderly person at least 6 times in a term. Keep a record of what you did and the person’s responses to your visit.
  • Go to a preschool or playcentre and help out at least 4 times a term. Keep a diary of your activities.
  • Listen to a younger child read and help them with their reading skills at least 3 times a week for a term. Keep a diary of your activities.
  • Give at least 12 hours of your time to the community. Record what you did and get comments from the other people involved.
  • Choose a charity you are interested in and organise a fund raising activity at school. Donate the money to your charity.
  • Do something to help someone else which makes a real difference for them. This has to be for at least once a week for at least 5 weeks. Keep a diary of what you did and the response from the person / people you were helping.
  • Create your own challenge under the heading of Kind.
